Transforming Your Property with Electric Gates

At The Electric Gate Centre (TEGE), we recently undertook a project to replace aging swing gates with a modern aluminium sliding gate. The original gates had become problematic over time, leading us to explore a more efficient solution. We collaborated closely with the homeowner to design a sliding gate that not only enhances security but also complements the property's aesthetic.

The chosen design featured open top bars and a stylish coated wood grain finish. This choice was made to ensure that the gate seamlessly matched the existing architecture of the home. After finalising the design, we prepared detailed drawings and agreed on a gate length of 3.8 metres, with an additional 700mm for the automation system.

Installation Process

Once the gate was ordered, our professional team arrived on-site to initiate the installation. The first step involved removing the old automation and controls. After that, we carefully lifted the block paving in the track area, ensuring it was stored for reuse.

Next, we scanned the ground for any underground services, such as pipes or electrical cables. Once we confirmed the area was clear, we excavated a trench measuring 300mm by 300mm across the opening and extending 4 metres to the rear. This trench was shuttered 100mm below ground level, allowing us to bolt the track securely and re-lay the block paving at the correct height.

To provide robust support for the gate, we extended the excavation on either side down to 700mm. We then installed two 120mm steel posts, which were galvanised and powder-coated black, into the holes, preparing them for concreting.

Concrete and Track Installation

We mixed and poured concrete into the excavation, ensuring it was levelled off 100mm below the finished ground level. This step was crucial for maintaining a smooth surface for the gate's operation. After allowing the concrete to cure for a week, we bolted down the ground track and motor plate, ensuring everything was level and straight.

For safety, we ran ducting to the far side for wiring the safety devices. An exit loop was placed underground to detect vehicles exiting the property, allowing the gate to open automatically. We then re-fitted the block paving up to the ground track, leaving only a 20mm round bar exposed for the gate wheels to run on, minimising the disruption for vehicles.

Gate Assembly and Automation

With the groundwork complete, we lowered the gate onto the track and secured it using a roller set bolted to the top of the 120mm post. To ensure safety and functionality, we installed physical end stops. These included a catch cup at the closed position to prevent the gate from being pushed into the property and a steel post concreted in place to stop the gate from moving past its open limit.

Next, we fitted the automation motor to the motor plate and installed a toothed drive rack on the gate. This rack was secured with specialist aluminium fixings, allowing the motor drive cog to mesh perfectly for smooth operation.

Safety Features and Final Touches

Safety is paramount in our installations. We connected all wiring and fitted safe edges, including one on the front of the gate equipped with a wireless transmitter to prevent entrapment during closing. Additionally, we installed three more safe edges on the post and wall to further enhance safety. Photo beams were also incorporated to protect vehicles parked within the gate's opening.

After completing the installation, we set up and tested the entire system. We then handed it over to the customer, providing a comprehensive training session. This session covered manual release methods, safety protocols, and user information on servicing. The homeowner received remote controls for gate operation and a wiring diagram for the open/close connections. They had chosen to employ a home automation engineer to integrate the gate with their existing system, rather than opting for an intercom or keypad from TEGE.
