Our history
EGC (The Electric Gate Centre) began in 1986, selling and installing automatic electric entrance gates primarily for domestic properties. We started from a small office in the village of Finedon, Northamptonshire, automating existing gates and doors, and supplying bespoke gate systems, posts, and groundwork for clients seeking tailored solutions.
In the 1980s, most electric gates were made of steel, and automation relied on hydraulic piston rams — the standard at the time. Our early clients included large detached homes and country estates, and we operated within a 60-mile radius, including North and West London and the Home Counties.
From these humble beginnings, we’ve always prioritised quality and specification. In 1987, alongside EGC, we launched The Garage Door Centre, offering high-quality garage doors and automation. This allowed both companies to specialise and deliver the best in product innovation, service, and technology.
By 1988, we moved to a new office and warehouse in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, a central UK location with excellent transport links. As sliding electric gates gained popularity, we introduced our own bespoke timber gate range, crafted from Iroko hardwood — a premium material still used in many of our gates today.
With the rise of underground automation systems, we expanded our offerings further. In 1994, we relocated to a larger showroom and warehouse in Wellingborough, which remains our main showroom today.
As demand grew, we acquired a separate warehouse and, in 2015, moved into an even larger facility with expanded offices. This became the home of the Dove Group — a family-owned group of companies offering more than just gates and garage doors. Despite our growth, we're a family run business and we’ve stayed true to our founding vision: to deliver high-quality, compliant, and safe electric gate and door systems.

Entrance Gates
We offer entrance gates in hardwood timber species specifically relevant to outdoor use in a climate like ours where there is high moisture content and massive variations in temperatures throughout the year. We also offer high quality aluminium and steel gates. Not lightweight DIY gates but proper guage profiles with welded or guaranteed jointing methods to guarantee longevity and the ability to offer much larger sizes.
The gates are all either sliding with a bottom tracking or cantilever sliding when the ground is not even or available. The swing gates are either single or double swing gates in almost any size. We also offer folding gate and rising gate systems for entrances with space issues such as in London or other cities or a cottage with limited driveway space.
Automation Equipment
There are multiple providers of gate and barrier automation equipment but also many providers offering lightweight DIY equipment designed for low use and lightweight gates. It is imperative the equipment used is properly specified to work with the gate size, weight and potential wind loading. Commercial gates for example might need to open and close several times per hour and sometimes 24 hours a day, all year round. The motor needs to be rated to deal with that kind of activity and provide the power required constantly.
As mentioned, safety is also super important these days in a commercial environment, there are no shortcuts at all. The legal requirements are stated and out there so simply have to be understood and built into the automated gate system for everyone’s peace of mind and safety.
